§ 01THE SOURCE
Before the world, there was only motion.
Before there was land, before light or shadow, there was only Aether — the source: an endless current of pure energy without shape or direction. It is no god and no creature. It does not think, and it wants nothing. Yet every power in Aetheria flows out of it.
There was a moment — no creature can say when — at which the current stopped. Not forever. But for one heartbeat of eternity, Aether ceased to move, and in that silence it set: into ground, into stone, into water and air. So the world was born. And there, where the source touches the world most closely, a column of light shot straight into the sky. Around that column the first city grew, ring by ring, like ripples from a stone dropped in still water. That city is Valdris.
The spiral is the sign of Aether — inward and outward, creating and dissolving, without beginning and without end.
Aether takes on the nature of the place it breaks through. In the old forests it turned green and living. Beneath the mountains it grew hard and steadfast. In the dark it became veiled; in the high air, radiant; in the wild country, untamed. And at the heart of everything, where all the currents meet, it became changeable and free. From those colours of the source came the six peoples of Aetheria.
§ 05THE GREAT STORY
THE LIGHT STILL BURNS.
BUT NOT AS IT DID.
It did not begin with a blow. It began with silence. The Sylvari felt it first — the oldest trees losing their glow, with no storm, no blight to blame. In the Deep, the Dwergar's Forge-fire began to waver. The Luminae charted holes in the Aether-stream itself. The Feralis ran harder and came less far. And the Umbra said nothing — which was itself a sign.
Deeper than the city's foundations, deeper than the Dwergar tunnels, something stands. Not living, not dead. It looks like a machine — stone and spiral and slow-moving Aether, set into the ground of the world by hands no one remembers. It once beat, like a heart. Now it beats less. And the source feels it.
No one knows who you are, or why you arrive in Valdris on the day that you do. But you are in the right place, at the right moment. That is enough.

What waits is no war with a face and a name. What waits is a question — what is weakening the source? — and the answer lies divided, a piece in every region. The light-pillar still burns over the city. The walls still wait to be pushed outward. And beneath the middle of everything, something has waited an age for the day someone goes deep enough.
You have arrived in Valdris. The future is not written. It is built.
